VTuber (which is short for Virtual YouTuber) is an online content creator who uses a virtual avatar instead of showing their real face.
The avatar is usually in an anime-style, 2D or 3D character, that moves in real time through motion capture and face-tracking technology, which allows the creator’s expressions and movements to be reflected by the character.
VTubers create many of the same kinds of content as traditional streamers and creators, including:
- Livestreams
- Gaming
- Singing and music
- Chatting (“zatsudan”)
- Art and creative content
- Collaborations with other creators
Many VTubers also develop a fictional identity, or lore, with a unique backstory, personality, and visual design. Some perform independently, while others belong to agencies that provide management, promotion, and technical support.
