Marshmello Face Reveal: Who Is Behind the Helmet?

Short answer: Marshmello has never taken the helmet off as part of an official reveal, but his identity isn’t really a secret. In April 2017 Forbes confirmed, using royalty databases, that Marshmello is the American DJ and producer Christopher Comstock. The famous “unmasking” at EDC 2016 was Tiësto in costume.

Marshmello is one of the biggest electronic music acts in the world, known for his white marshmallow helmet and hits like “Alone”, “Silence” with Khalid, “Friends” with Anne-Marie and “Happier” with Bastille. That’s why searches like “Marshmello face”, “Chris Comstock” and “Christopher Comstock” keep trending.

Has Marshmello done a face reveal?

Not in the sense fans mean. Marshmello still performs and appears in public in the helmet, and he has never staged a moment where he takes it off to show his face as a reveal. His identity, though, was reported by Forbes in April 2017: royalty databases linked the Marshmello project to Christopher Comstock, and other clues lined up, including Skrillex calling him “Chris” and matching tattoos and birthdays.

So the helmet today is more of a brand than a disguise. It keeps the focus on the character and the music, the same idea deadmau5 used before him.

The EDC 2016 “unmasking”

At Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas in June 2016, Marshmello’s helmet came off on stage and Dutch DJ Tiësto was underneath, claiming to be him. It was widely seen as a publicity stunt, not least because the two had conflicting tour dates. It’s still one of the most shared “Marshmello face reveal” clips, and it isn’t him.
